Come nasce un pattern... How a pattern... was born!

This week I'm in the top100 (selected amongst more than 600 patterns) in the Spoonflower+Bucketfeet contest!
I had to create a pattern for a pair of shoes, about Ocean and its life.

Here you can see a mockup on the shoes. Mockups are really useful to understand if your design is good for that kind of product.

Let's speak about my Ocean-life pattern now! It wasn't easy to create it. Sometimes it's more difficult to simplify a design and find a concept, than to draw a rich pattern. You start thinking about fishes, corals, cephalopods, jellyfishes, whales... you would like to put all the ocean in those shoes... but you haven't really much place for it!

So.. I decided to concentrate my effort  on a single ocean creature... and started drawing shells... I wasn't happy with the result! I tried a colorful version... but it was worst than this one!

I decided to work on a waved background... and I loved the waves idea... but now I really couldn't use the shells on it... so... I fired the shells! :D

Work, draw, sketch, try a new  foam effect... slowly I was going in the right direction, I loved the concept...

E finalmente trovo l'onda giusta! Ah ah! Mi sembro un surfer! :D

And finally here I found the right wave! Ah ah! I'm feeling a surfer! :D
My pattern was named Ocean life... so I drew many many fishes in every wave!

Secondo me quelle onde smagriscono pure! Grazie! :D

I'm leaving you with my last mockup on a swimsuit! I love it! I think my waves help to flatter the figure... and I could look slimmer wearing it! XD
If you wish to vote, please go to the Spoonflower Contest page! Thank you! :D
